What is ProfiSwitch X5

ProfiSwitch X5 is a PROFIBUS network device that can be used to split a metallic network into up to 5+1 galvanically isolated channels. It also allows you to set different baudrate for each channel – easily using rotary switches.
You can use the ProfiSwitch X5 both in new installations and when upgrading existing networks where a reduction of transmission speed is required. A typical case is when the PROFIBUS MASTER communicates at 12 Mbit/s, but you need some segments to run, for example, at 1.5 Mbit/s. If it is not possible to adjust the speed directly in the PROFIBUS MASTER, the ProfiSwitch X5 provides a practical solution.

• By reducing the PROFIBUS transmission speed, you can use longer cables and thus easily connect devices located further away.

• ProfiSwitch X5 also solves situations where certain PROFIBUS devices support only lower transmission speeds and cannot operate in a 12 Mbit/s network.

Galvanic isolation of PROFIBUS segments and clearer topology

Similar to other devices in the ProfiHub B5 series, the ProfiSwitch X5 is designed to create a star topology for PROFIBUS DP networks. The maximum number of PROFIBUS DP segments that can be created is five, and all segments are galvanically isolated from each other. Disturbances or bad signals in one segment are therefore not transmitted to another segment and do not affect its stability. Thanks to diagnostic LEDs on each segment, faults can be detected before the PROFIBUS network stops working. Each segment is equipped with a SUB-D9 connector, which serves as a measurement point for connecting a PROFIBUS diagnostic tool, such as the ProfiTrace 2 tester.
