OPC Router & KEPServerEX

The OPC Router is ideal for those who already use KEPServerEX or other OPC servers in their projects because it can bring a new dimension to them. Both these platforms can exchange data via the OPC UA protocol. In terms of hierarchy, KEPServerEX is below the OPC Router because its biggest strength is its ability to collect data from disparate control systems and convert all the various data formats to a standardised protocol, in this case the OPC UA protocol.

Above KEPServerEX, you will find the OPC Router, which collects standardised data from KEPServerEX via the OPC UA and then converts it to the languages of such systems as MES/ERP, SAP / SAP HANA DB, databases, MQTT, printers, email and many others.

OPC Router a KEPServerEX schema | FOXON

One of the OPC Router's strengths is its ability to mathematically process data. This functionality is invaluable to those who make the right data ready through KEPServerEX and use higher systems only for visualisation (e.g. visualisations, reports and BI views).

When collecting data, it is important to use a standardised solution instead of countless communication interfaces, let alone purpose-built. Both OPC Router and KEPServerEX are excellent examples of standardised data collection and processing, with both of them supporting horizontal scalability (adding further data sources, for example machines) as well as vertical scalability (data sent to operators, production planners, the CEO, the cloud, etc.).

License Activation

The latest OPC Router 4.25 release does not only bring new capabilities, but also new licensing. From now on, all licenses have to be activated on the OPC Router license portal.

Licenses can be activated online or offline.

Online OPC Router Activation

If the computer that you want to activate OPC Router on has Internet access and thus access to the OPC Router license cloud portal, you can activate OPC Router online. Compared to offline activation, this option is faster.

Offline OPC Router Activation

If the computer that you want to activate OPC Router on does not have Internet access, the activation of your new license is a little more complicated.

To help you with your license activation, we have prepared a License Activation Guide for you. Click on the button below to download it in PDF format.

Download Guide

Where can I download the trial version and how does it work?

The trial version is available for download in our online shop.

It is a full-featured trial version, which means that all plug-ins and add-ons are available for you to try. As it is a 2-hour demo, after it has been running for 2 hours, for it to run for another 2 hours you simply have to restart the OPC Router.

Download OPC Router Trial Version

What is the Update & Support program for and why do I have to purchase it?

The Update & Support program is compulsory only during the first year of using the OPC Router. In subsequent years, it is optional.

With the Update & Support program, you are entitled to technical support, all released software updates and license recovery in the event of a computer/server failure (without this program you would lose your license).

How do I connect devices that do not support the OPC UA protocol (e.g. the S7-300) to the OPC Router?

The OPC Router does not enable you to read data from PLC systems deployed in production. For this purpose, you can use the KEPServerEX platform. After that, you connect KEPServerEX to the OPC Router – via the OPC UA protocol. For more information, please read this article on our blog.

System Requirements

Computer Performance

The OPC Router is a server application and thus needs to run on appropriate hardware. This hardware should meet the following requirements:
  • A multi-core processor
  • At least 4 GB RAM
  • Enough hard disk space (with RAID 5 technology)

Operating System

We recommend Microsoft Windows Server operating systems (see the list below). For testing purposes, you can also use Client operating systems (64-bit).

  • Windows Server 2008 x64
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 x64
  • Windows Server 2012 x64
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 x64
  • Windows Server 2016 x64

  • Windows 8 x64
  • Windows 8.1 x64
  • Windows 10 x64
  • Windows 10 IoT x64

OPC Servers Supported by the OPC Router

OPC servers in the OPC Router enable you to connect control systems and other devices via OPC UAOPC DA 4.0 or OPC XML.

If you would like to use the OPC server functionality, you need to purchase the OPC Module license.

Database Servers Supported by the OPC Router

Database servers are not part of the OPC Router installation. They need to be installed separately. The OPC Router supports these database systems:

  • MS SQL
  • Oracle
  • MySQL
  • MS Access
  • XML
  • ODBC-compliant databases
Database system plug-ins are not included in the Basic licence. They need to be purchased separately.

SAP Plug-In

The SAP Plug-In supports SAP systems 4.0b and newer. The SAP Log-on pad must be installed on the server that the OPC Router runs on.

The SAP Plug-In is not included in the Basic licence. It needs to be purchased separately.
