Fiber ring PROFIBUS module ComBricks

Optical modules with support for SM (single-mode), is suitable for longer distances or in heavily cluttered environments (EMC). ComBricks can be easily converted into a remotely monitored optical hub by connecting with copper segments. The hub topology delivers optimized delay times. The enhanced optical module core includes diagnostic LEDs and supports redundancy functionality. 4 ST/BFOC connectors are used for the fiber connection.

When using the multi-mode type the range is up to 5 km, with the single-mode type the range is up to 30 km. You can create almost any topology using these modules.

Before using the circular topology, the manufacturer recommends a firmware update, it must be v1.288 or higher.

In a circular topology, channels CH1 to CH1 and CH2 to CH2 must be connected. Only when the number of modules is unequal, channels CH1 and CH2 can be connected, but only once in the whole circle.

Module configuration

Module setup is done using DIP switches on the bottom of the module, network setup can be done on the ComBricks web interface, but we prefer HW setup using DIP switches. This is because it is already clear at the first glance at the ComBricks module how it is set up.

Diagnostic options

These optical modules also have excellent diagnostic capabilities. If we are directly at the device, we can use LED signalling.

However, we have the ability to remotely diagnose via a web server using the built-in ProfiTrace OE features. These functions allow us to learn information from all modules, including the signal strength of the optical fibers or the status of the ring topology.

The optical signal strength is displayed in three levels:

-signal is OK,
-the signal is low (Signal low),
-no signal (No signal).

For the circular topology we have a signaling of two states:

-Ring topology is OK (Ring OK),
-Ring is broken (Ring failure).

Using advanced email features, ComBricks can alert you when a fault, signal strength reduction or damage to the ring topology occurs. Depending on the triggers you set, events can also be logged to a memory card and are displayed on the web interface on the Network Event Log tab. These triggers can be set for any change or only when the status deteriorates.

Depending on the settings, an e-mail will be sent or a log entry will be made, or both.

In addition, the output on the control module or an added module with digital or relay outputs can be set according to the event. The output can switch some beacon or input in the PLC control system, etc.
