Use of the product

The ComBricks modular system set is designed for basic monitoring of a single PROFIBUS DP network based on PROFIBUS DP telegrams (i.e. it only monitors PROFIBUS telegrams, it does not measure voltage quality and oscilloscope waveforms on PROFIBUS stations).

The Eco monitoring set contains:

  • 1x control station 1B,
  • 1x 1 segment repeater module,
  • 1x ComBricks module interconnection bus

How does the PROFIBUS DP network measure and monitor?

Using the module's web interface, you can monitor the status of the connected stations in the PROFIBUS network, their statistics (repeated messages, station loss, corrupted messages, sync, diagnostic queries, etc.). In addition, you can set the recording of messages in the PROFIBUS network according to the conditions reached.

As soon as an unwanted error message is detected in the PROFIBUS network, the recording of messages is started and saved on the memory card of control station 1B. ComBricks can send you an e-mail about each of these unwanted events and record the message in the event list. You can open and analyze all of these records in ProfiTrace 2, this is mainly an analysis of communication messages. All diagnostics can be done remotely, you can access ComBricks via TCP/IP (e.g. with Ewon modems).

Great solution also for data collection

With this kit, you can install software ProfiTrace 2 for ComBricks on a PC and remotely connect to the ComBricks module, monitor network status, inter-station communication, etc. This program can also be used as an OPC server to collect data from ComBricks modules.

The program must be run with the Run as administrator option, otherwise the connection and OPC server will not work properly.

Easy and quick installation

Simple DIN rail mounting, 24 VDC power supply connected via terminal connector. Configuration via web interface using a standard internet browser.

How to connect PROFIBUS to the ComBricks repeater module

When connecting the PROFIBUS network, care must be taken to connect the communication cables and the network termination correctly. If you only connect one cable to the module, it must always go to the input and the termination resistor must be switched on. In the older version, there were two terminal connectors on the bottom of the module and one DB9 connector on the front. Newer modules have one terminal connector on the bottom side and one DB9 connector on the front side. In the following section, you will find the recommended PROFIBUS connection method.

How to connect ComBricks to a PROFIBUS network

On older ComBricks modules, the terminal connectors are divided into input and output. If the segment will not continue to the next station, plug in the input connector and turn on the termination resistor on the repeater (see Figure A) or use the DB9 connector and turn on the termination resistor on the repeater (see Figure C), always only one of them.

On new ComBricks modules, there is only one terminal connector and the DB9 connector. If you will be connecting only one cable, again you must turn on the termination resistor. If the segment does not continue, it is recommended to use the DB9 connector and turn on the termination on the connector, not on the repeater (see Figure C). If you want to use wiring through the terminal block connector for a through segment, use a double terminal to connect the shield to the terminal block. Alternatively, you can use a combination of a terminal block connector and a DB9 connector; they are connected one-to-one and are not galvanically isolated (for multiple segments, the same segment connectors apply, different segments are galvanically isolated). The termination resistor is not switched on for the through segment.

Connecting the terminal connector

  • Pin "A" - green wire
  • Pin "B" - red wire
  • Pin "SH" - shield (recommended connection)
  • Pin "I" - shielding via capacitor (see manual for details)
  • Connecting the pass-through segment and shielding via the terminal connector
